At SkillStorm, it’s part of our mission to train and certify veterans in high-demand technologies and help them begin their careers in technology. One of the ways we do this is through our amazing veteran partners.
One of those partners is Veterans ASCEND. This organization removes barriers and bias; creating direct connections that highlight the skills service members, veterans, and military spouses bring to an organization.
We talked with Robyn Grable, Founder, and CEO of Veterans ASCEND, about the amazing work that her organization is doing and how the partnership with SkillStorm has helped bring more opportunities for the veterans that need them.
Q: Tell us a little bit about Veterans ASCEND? How did it come about? What are the services that you provide to veterans?
A: Veterans ASCEND was born in 2014 when I met an Army veteran’s wife who told me her husband had been out for six months and could not get an interview. He was getting depressed, and she didn’t know how to help him. The idea that there had to be a better way to connect employers and military talent started there and blossomed in 2018.
Veterans ASCEND translates military and civilian occupations into a skills profile. Not a title translator only. We dive deep to create a meaningful list of skills related to military experience.
Q: What are some of the benefits that Veterans get when working with Veterans ASCEND?
A: No resume. No applying first to get to an interview. Veterans ASCEND instantly matches veterans and military families with employers. Not the employer’s job board; we connect candidates directly to the hiring manager or decision-maker, directly for an interview. Our service is free for all military members and families. We open doors across industries, across careers to give veterans recognition for their skills and the opportunity to align with a career they want with the respect they deserve.
Q: What is the most rewarding part of your job?
A: Helping so many people. Making meaningful connections between employers who are intentionally hiring military talent and our military community.
Q: How would you encourage others to support veterans and military spouses in finding professional success?
A: See beyond titles. Value the years of experience in the service rather than dismiss them because you can’t see their “industry experience” in your particular industry. Veterans and military spouses are so well-rounded. They are creative, resourceful, team-minded, mission-critical thinkers, and service-oriented. Not to mention trainable. What company couldn’t win with employees like that?
Q: What part of the SkillStorm + Veterans ASCEND partnership do you think is the most beneficial to veterans?
A: The direct connection to hiring managers, decision-makers who value their service and skills as assets to the SkillStorm staff and training opportunities.
Q: Anything else you would like to share with us?
A: With synergies in our business models of building pipelines of candidates for our clients, this partnership between SkillStorm and Veterans ASCEND will have a lasting positive impact.
